Your four legged friend often times will bring more than love into the house.  Unfortunately, Rover’s leavings are often the common source of many diseases invading your home.  It’s typically brought in by him on his fur, or on your kids clothes or shoes.  Regardless, you need to know about them to keep you family safe.  We will also give you some ideas to combat the micro-menaces.  Here is a list of the pests and a brief description of what they are:

Coccidian – common in young domestic animals(puppies/kittens), is a one celled parasite that will often cause diarrhea.

Giardia – Also a one celled parasite that causes diarrhea but found in adult animals.  Unfortunately, the infection is not easily diagnosed nor is it treated effectively.

Roundworm – Easily spread to humans, this parasite can affect the digestive system as well as the lungs.  Symptoms are vomiting, diarrhea and in more serious cases convulsions.

Hookworm – a nasty parasite that attaches itself to your intestinal wall to get their meal by sucking your blood for nutrients.  Intense inflammation or even anemia can be symptoms.

Whipworms – Burrowing into the wall of your intestines, these parasites are similar to the blood thirsty hookworms mentioned above. Weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, and anemia are all possible symptoms of this parasite.

Parvo Virus – Among the most harmful of the diseases,  this causes damage to the digestive tract where nutrients are absorbed.  Also, this can cause such severe diarrhea and vomiting that it can kill your pet through dehydration.

Consistent removal of backyard feces is the absolute best way to combat these problems.  As well as, frequent visits to the vet and keeping up with all vaccinations, fecal exams and de-worming.  Rain is a big problem with breaking up feces and spreading all over the yard, making almost impossible to clean up properly.  Keep your yard clean.
